Steve Richards’ knack for extracting significant results out of a small team of horses will ensure Lazumba will have her fans at Flemington on Saturday.
Lazumba heads to Flemington for the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes, a race Richards won six years with Rostova when it was a Group One event.
Richards also trained Marcado for an unlucky third in last year’s edition and Lazumba is on a similar similar program.
A daughter of Sebring, Lazumba made a solid debut over 1100m when second at Ballarat on February 26 with Richards saying she would have won in one more stride.
“She’s given me the indication that what she’s wanting is this trip (1400m),” Richards said.
“I don’t think there will be any problem with her running that out at all.”
Richards had Blue Diamond Stakes aspirations for Lazumba, paying up for the filly at the first and second declaration stage before making the decision to wait for the Sires’.
“She was showing ability but the helter skelter of that sort of race we thought would be too hard,” he said.
Richards, who keeps a dozen horses in training, said he was preparing a lot of young stock as he waits for some his older brigade to return from an injury-enforced break.
