Leading jockey Nash Rawiller confirmed his fitness for the important Warwick Stakes program when he made his first ride a winning one at Thursday’s Hawkesbury Gold Cup meeting.

Last season’s premiership-winning jockey then won the next three races at the provincial meeting to complete a roller-coaster 24 hours in which his spring carnival could have easily been over before it started.

Rawiller was back in the saddle at Hawkesbury after he escaped serious injury in a barrier stalls mishap at Canterbury.

Rawiller was pinned to the back of the starting gates when his mount flipped over and became stranded in the stalls. He suffered bruising to his lower back area and was stood down for the rest of the midweek meeting.

But there was no evidence that his renowned strength in a finish of a race was compromised when he drove the Tony McEvoy-trained De Crillon to victory in a Cup support race.

De Crillon was challenged strongly in the straight but drew clear late under Rawiller’s urgings to kick-start what McEvoy hopes will be the start of a profitable Sydney association with the champion jockey.

“Nash has been coming out to Hawkesbury to ride work for me and when he gave her the seal of approval last week that was good enough for me,” McEvoy said.

Rawiller then posted a race-to-race double on Casiroll for Chris Waller, a trainer who promises to be central to his chances of a Warwick Stakes day haul on Saturday.

He will ride ATC Australian Oaks-winning filly Royal Descent and promising stayer Lucripetous for the three-time premiership-winning trainer as well as the Joe Pride-trained Rain Affair, an odds-on favourite for the weight-for-age Warwick Stakes.

Royal Descent is also in the red to make a winning return in the Toy Show Quality.

Rawiller’s early Hawkesbury quartet was completed on the Darren Smith-trained The Gallows.

While Rawiller was in winning form at Hawkesbury, Hugh Bowman missed his second meeting in as many days because of the flu.
