Jockeys will honour late cricketer and racehorse owner Phillip Hughes by wearing black armbands at race meetings throughout NSW this weekend.
Hughes died two days after suffering a catastrophic brain injury when he was hit in the neck by a ball while playing for South Australia against NSW in a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday.
Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys said the death of Hughes, a registered racehorse owner, had had an effect on all sporting codes.
“The passing of Phillip Hughes has had a huge impact on not just everyday Australians, but it has been heartfelt by many around the world,” V’landys said.
“This is a very distressing time for Phillip’s family, friends and colleagues and on behalf of the entire New South Wales racing industry I would like to pass on sincere condolences on the loss of a fine young man taken in the prime of his life.”
