Suspensions cruelled the early part of 2102 for Nash Rawiller but the premier jockey has been quickly making up for lost time with four feature wins in the past two weeks.

Rawiller bagged a Caulfield double two weeks ago in the Group One Futurity Stakes and Group Two Peter Young Stakes while last week he was prominent in Sydney with wins on Pierro in the Silver Slipper and Wild And Proud in the Hobartville Stakes.

The Sydney-based hoop will be back in Melbourne chasing more feature race success on Saturday aboard Lucas Cranach in the Group One Australian Cup (2000m) and Albert The Fat in the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m).

“I’m starting to get a bit of a roll on which is good. It’s the right time of the year to be firing,” Rawiller said.

“It was a bit frustrating over the Christmas and New Year period but I think I’m pretty well placed now heading into the autumn.”

A brilliant first-up win to import Lucas Cranach in the Peter Young Stakes (1800m) has Rawiller looking forward to continuing the partnership in the Australian Cup.

Lucas Cranach will meet a number of the horses he beat last start but also 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain who’ll have his first start for trainer David Hayes.

“I imagine it would be even harder on Saturday but I’m brimming with confidence, really,” Rawiller said.

“There’s no reason not to be.

“I couldn’t have been happier with him last start. He gave me a beautiful ride and travelled into the race extremely well.

“I was full of confidence before we straightened for home and from the 500 (metre mark) to the 400 he put himself right on the bunny basically in the space of 100 metres.

“I thought it was a great win.”

The Chris Waller-trained Albert The Fat returns to Flemington on Saturday for the Newmarket after winning the Emirates Stakes (1600m) at the track on the final day of last year’s Melbourne Cup carnival.

Rawiller rode Albert The Fat three times leading up to the Emirates but missed the meeting through suspension with Albert The Fat also only carrying 54kg that day which would have been out of Rawiller’s weight range.

“He runs well fresh,” Rawiller said.

“If he can just sit out the back where he’s happy and unleash with a couple of good sectionals late then he should be chiming in the last 50 metres, hopefully.”
