The suspension of Peter Moody’s licence will have a devastating effect on his business.

Moody faced Racing Victoria stewards on Wednesday to show cause as to why his licence should not be suspended before his hearing on a cobalt charge is heard.

The Caulfield based trainer faces an administration and presentation charge after Lidari returned a level of 380 micrograms per litre of urine, above the threshold of 200 micrograms per litre introduced in April last year, after running second in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington last October.

Moody has 120 horses in training with a further 240 horses on his books, a staff of 70 with a wages bill of $50,000 a week with costs totalling $15 million a year.

Matthew Stirling, representing Moody, said standing down Moody would cost the trainer $200,000 in redundancy payouts while he would also have to move his horses which would affect his 1100 owners.

Moody said after the hearing that he doesn’t believe there is a fitting case to stand him down.

“I have worked closely with RVL and the stewards department to work this situation out and will continue to do so going forward,” Moody said.

“The submission put on the table for the training fees (percentages) to be withheld was over my head but I can assure you that every dollar that goes through my business is put back into my business to keep it going.”

Stirling said they wouldn’t accept for one minute that there is a strong case over the administration of cobalt and there was no evidence of Moody ever purchasing the substance.

“It’s entirely a circumstantial case,” Stirling said.

Earlier on Wednesday the father and son training partnership of Lee and Shannon Hope faced stewards over a show cause notice.

The pair were charged with high cobalt readings after three of their horses tested above the threshold and have a date before the RAD Board set down for October 15 to have the charges heard.

The Hopes immediately changed their feeding regime after being informed of the high readings.

Both trainers will learn of the learn the fate of their show cause hearings at a later date.
