Manighar has pleased the Luca Cumani stable with his workout at Werribee on Tuesday in preparation for Saturday’s Group Two Zipping Classic at Sandown.

Supervised by travelling foreman Charlie Henson, the grey galloped over 1400m.

“All’s good. We didn’t need to do a hard piece of work, the Cup was only a week ago,” Henson said.

Manighar ran a solid fifth behind Dunaden in the Melbourne Cup.

“The Cup run was probably a career-best really,” Henson said.

“The blinkers probably improved him but the race didn’t quite pan out as we expected it to.

“We were at the back of a pretty consistent pace early and had they slowed it up down the back he was in an ideal spot to quicken before the others.

“But he ran a very good race and he was one of the only ones up there up on the pace that managed to stay there.”

The honest six-year-old goes into the race on the back of superior lead-up form to last year having also finished fourth in the Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Last year the Linamix gelding had run fifth in the Caulfield Cup and seventh in the Melbourne Cup before running third to Zipping in the $350,000 race which was known as the Sandown Classic from 1999 when it became a weight-for-age event.

With Damien Oliver under suspension, Dwayne Dunn takes the ride on Manighar.

Dunn rode stablemate Drunken Sailor into seventh place in the Caulfield Cup and 12th in the Melbourne Cup and he also rode another stablemate Sahara Sun when he was unplaced in the Bendigo Cup and last Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Henson named Americain and Mourayan as the hardest to beat.

Americain, who will be sent out a short-priced favourite in the Classic after his huge run for fourth in the Melbourne Cup under topweight of 58kg, had a walk, trot and canter at Werribee in readiness for the 2400m feature.

The 2010 Melbourne Cup hero will run in the name of his French trainer Alain De Royer-Dupre in the Zipping and next month’s Hong Kong Vase (2400m), a race in which he ran third to Mastery last year.

Americain will again be ridden by Gerald Mosse.

Rain on Tuesday made the track rating a dead 4 which was encouraging for Americain who would not be a starter on a flint-hard surface.

Further rain is forecast for Wednesday with occasional showers later in the week.

The Brain Ellison-trained Saptapadi, who finished 16th in the Melbourne Cup, worked at Jim Conlan’s property, where he is stabled, on Monday.

Danny Nikolic has been engaged for the mount.

There was one extra nomination, the Colin and Cindy Alderson-trained Montgomerie, after entries were extended.

Montgomerie ran seventh in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington.
