Jockey Ben Melham and apprentice Dylan Dunn dead-heated for first in a race at Sandown but both fell foul of stewards for breaching whip rules.
Melham was the most serious offender, fined $1000 after guiding Belvedere Road to equal first in the Wellington RC Handicap with Zazparella who was ridden by Dunn.
Melham was fined $700 for using the whip in a forehand manner five times more than allowed before the 100m of the 2100m race.
He was fined another $300 because the final four strikes were in consecutive strides.
Chief steward Terry Bailey said it was only Melham’s good record in relation to whip breaches that saved him from a suspension.
Dunn copped a $400 fine for using the whip once more than allowed before the 100m.
There were five jockeys in the same race fined for a breach of the whip rules, with Mark Zahra and Dean Yendall fined $300 while Patrick Moloney was fined $200.
