Commanding Jewel’s spring is over with the Group One-winning mare sent to the paddock to recover from a muscle injury.

Last year’s Thousand Guineas winner returned from a lengthy lay-off earlier this season and won the Group Two Let’s Elope Stakes.

She had a setback in the lead-up to last Sunday’s Rupert Clarke Stakes which forced her out of that race and now the rest of the spring.

Trainer Leon Corstens had hoped the mare would still be able to play some part in the carnival but that has been scrapped with connections taking the safe approach.

“We sent her to have scintigraphy and it showed she had torn a little muscle up high in her backside,” Corstens said.

“Instead of doing more damage we’ve decided to send her to the paddock for four weeks and let it heal to give her the best opportunity and bring her back for the autumn.”

The Group One Australian Cup in March will be the mission for the three-quarter sister to Atlantic Jewel.

Commanding Jewel had shown she was back in top form winning the Let’s Elope Stakes where she defeated Catkins who was a subsequent Group winner at Caulfield.

The mare’s absence from the business end of the spring is a blow for Corstens and her connections but the trainer is looking on the bright side.

“Without a doubt it’s disappointing but we’ve still got a horse and that’s the main thing,” he said.

Corstens, meanwhile, has two fillies competing at Flemington on Saturday with Fantome Gris lining up in the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) while Leia runs in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1000m).

“They are being thrown in the deep end and we’ll just see where they are at,” Corstens said.

“I think both will run nice races but at the finish of the day we’ll know where we’re going and what we’re doing.”
