Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller has come from behind to win the prestigious Bart Cummings medal for the fourth time.

The award is decided by votes from media for performances by trainers and jockeys at metropolitan meetings throughout the season.

Waller reeled in former Darley trainer Peter Snowden in the final few weeks to win by 87 points to 73.

The Bart Cummings medal was presented on Saturday as part of ceremony to honour the champions of the 2013-2014 season with Waller once again receiving the TJ Smith medal, premier jockey James McDonald his first George Moore award and Sam Clipperton his second Theo Green medal as the leading apprentice.

“Chris Waller continues to amaze the industry with his exceptional feats,” Peter V’landys, chief executive of Racing NSW, said.

“To win four successive Bart Cummings Medals in an arena littered with some of the best racing talents anywhere in the world is astonishing.”

The metropolitan premiership winners also received luxury watches courtesy of the Australian Turf Club and Longines with Kathy O’Hara also awarded a watch as the leading female rider.

Apart from the leading trainer and jockeys, other prizes were awarded for the first time for excellence in other areas.

Robert Thompson was honoured for his Australian record of 4000 winners he achieved earlier this year, which equates to 100 winners a year during his 40 years in the saddle.

Recently retired starter Bill Dale received the Racing NSW Award for Extraordinary Services after almost 50 years in the industry.

“This award is for a person behind the scenes that goes about their business in a professional manner, and never expects recognition,” V’landys said.

Tommy Berry was the NSW Racing Writers’ Personality of the Year for his fortitude during the most trying time of his life when he lost his twin brother and fellow jockey Nathan in April.

“Tommy is a shining example to sports people on how to handle the media when under extreme pressure,” V’landys said.

Phillip McInerney, who works for trainer Todd Howlett, received the Dedicated Performance award, while Waller stable employee George Tucker was the Strapper of the Year.
