Melbourne Cup day which is held on the first Tuesday of November consists of ten races including the Cup itself. Melbourne Cup day usually sticks to a similar fixture each year with just the one other group race on the day, it being a Group 3 for 4YO and older.
There is however four other Listed race throughout the day the first of which is a 2YO race in Race 1, this race is often a good form race when looking towards the Blue Diamond Stakes earlier the following year. Last years winner was Applegate.
The first race on Melbourne Cup day always starts at 10:20am which is noted as being very early to start a days racing, but with ten races to get through its a must to allow racegoers enough to get home as public transport is very busy. View our page on Melbourne Cup travel
The last race on Melbourne Cup day is at 5:15pm although after the Melbourne Cup is run many of the race fans make the long journey home, it is not uncommon for the last race to have around 10% of the viewers of that of the cup.
