Like many of the countries greatest horse races, the Golden Slipper is about more than a single racing event. The Golden Slipper is held on Golden Slipper Day, a full day of racing and racing culture held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney each year. Golden Slipper Day is hosted by the Australian Turf Club, who put on a fantastic day of entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

Golden Slipper Day is a celebration of Sydney racing culture, including food, fashion, and other aspects of racing life. It is designed as a full day of entertainment both on and off the track, with the public mixing with models, musicians, designers, chefs, and other A-list celebrities. Golden Slipper Day is centred around the racing however, with five Group 1 races making it the richest single day of racing on the Australian calendar.

Golden Slipper Stakes

This event is the highlight of Golden Slipper Day, a 1200 metre race that has been run since 1957. This race has become the richest horse race in the entire world for two year old horses, with the $3.5 million on offer helping to attract a strong field.

Status – Group 1
Distance – 1200 metres
Date – Saturday, 6th of April, 2013
Conditions – 2 year olds, set weights
Prize Money – $3.5M

The BMW

While there are five Group 1 races held on Golden Slipper Day, The BMW is definitely the second biggest race of the day. Being run over a distance of 2400 metres, The BMW offers a nice counterpoint to the pace of the Golden Slipper Stakes. The BMW is worth a total of $2.25 million, and was formerly known as the HE Trancred Stakes.

Status – Group 1
Distance – 2400 metres
Date – Saturday, 6th of April, 2013
Conditions – weight for age
Prize Money – $2.25M

Storm Queen Stakes

The Storm Queen Stakes is worth more than $400,000 in prize money, which is a step down from the Golden Slipper and The BMW. However, this event is an important part of Golden Slipper Day and always manages to attract a strong field of runners. Run over a distance of 2000 metres and held under set weight conditions, the Storm Queen Stakes is a great race for three year old fillies who want to prove themselves in a Group 1 race.

Status – Group 1
Distance – 2000 metres
Date – Saturday, 6th of April, 2013
Conditions – 3 year old, set weights
Prize Money – $400,000

George Ryder Stakes

The George Ryder Stakes is run over a distance of 1500 metres, and offers a similar prize money pool to the Storm Queen Stakes. This event has been known to attract top quality sprinters over the years, including names like Danleigh and Lonhro who won back to back in 2003 and 2004. The George Ryder Stakes is a great inclusion to the fabulous Golden Slipper Day.

Queen Of The Turf Stakes
