Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse made a lightning trip to Cranbourne to watch classy galloper Bank Robber trial and the gelding didn’t let her down, putting in a pleasing performance.

The son of Dash For Cash was ridden by Brad Rawiller and was never off the bridle in his 990 metre heat, the gelding handling the Cranbourne training track with ease.

Rawiller steered Bank Robber to a five-length win over the Greg Eurell-trained Go My Girl and the city-performed pair Barwon Express and Tale Of Love.

“That was a pleasing trial,” Waterhouse said. “He was never out of first gear and I liked the way he quickened when Brad gave him a little squeeze.

“He’ll run over 1200 metres first-up at Moonee Valley in the Moir Stakes and he’ll be very competitive.”

Meanwhile, Waterhouse said Epsom Handicap winner Rock Kingdom will chase Group I wins on successive Saturdays in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield.

Rock Kingdom outlasted Rangirangdoo at Randwick on Saturday but Waterhouse said the son of Rock Of Gibraltar had come through the race in good order.

“Even though it was a wet-track, you wouldn’t even know he has had a run,” Waterhouse said. “He’ll be floated down on Tuesday night and he’ll be right to go in the Toorak Handicap.”
Premier Melbourne jockey Craig Williams will ride Rock Kingdom in the Toorak Handicap.

Gerald Ryan walked away a happy trainer from Monday’s Randwick two-year-old trials after solid performances from all his charges, headed by the impressive heat winner Champagne Dynamite.

Champagne Dynamite lived up to her name, exploding away from her rivals to win her heat by 4-1/2 lengths, covering the 800 metres in 46.73 seconds, nearly a second quicker than the next fastest heat.

“She’s been the two-year-old which has shown me the most. Definitely speed-wise anyway,” Ryan said. “She’s just a natural runner and she showed that today.”

Ryan said Champagne Dynamite had been “a handful” in her first preparation but had matured with a break.

“She was really temperamental when we first had her in the stable,” Ryan said. “We turned her back out to get ready for this preparation and when she came back she was a different horse.

“She’s not really a big filly but she’s taken the education we have given her well and now she’s shown us something at the trials, we just need to get her to her first start next Saturday.”

Ryan said Champagne Dynamite would have her first race start in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) next Saturday at Randwick.

It will be the filly’s only spring outing.

“She’s a Magic Millions filly so we might look at the big race up there,” Ryan said. “She’ll probably have only the one run before a break.

“She’s owned by the same people as Our Joan Of Arc but she won’t be following the same path as Our Joan Of Arc and go to Melbourne.”

Champagne Dynamite is by Not A Single Doubt from the Geiger Counter mare Mrs Geiger and is a half-sister to the stakes-placed, four-time Melbourne winner Gone Critical.

She was a $28,000 purchase for Darby Bloodstock from this year’s Magic Millions sales.

Other trial winners included Epic, a colt by the Golden Slipper winner Stratum, trained at Scone by Greg Bennett.

Stradbroke Handicap winner Black Piranha will continue his Cox Plate build-up with an 1100-metre barrier trial at Newcastle on Wednesday.

Black Piranha impressed all at Rosehill with a brilliant exhibition gallop but trainer Con Karakatsanis said the six-year-old needed to trial on Wednesday to keep pace with his Cox Plate opposition.

“I’m training him for 2000 metres and the trial will be a perfect lead-in to his first-up run,” Karakatsanis said. “It’s not a rush job but he has had a bit longer in the paddock than some of the others.

“El Segundo and Whobegotyou have had two runs each this time in so he’ll trial on Wednesday and be right for the Cameron Stakes.”

The Cameron Stakes will be run over 1300 metres for the first time on September 16 which Karakatsanis said would fit neatly into his preferred spring plan for Black Piranha.

“The ideal way to go into the Cox Plate would be the Cameron Handicap then the George Main Stakes on the last Saturday in September,” he said.

“That gives us enough time to run in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield before the Cox Plate. He’ll get plenty of weight in that race but he’s going there mainly to race the Melbourne way.

“Then he’ll have two weeks to go into the Cox Plate at his fourth run.”

TAB Sportsbet currently rates Black Piranha as a $16 chance for the Cox Plate.

Black Piranha will make his first public appearance since winning the Group I Stradbroke Handicap with a barrier trial at Rosehill on Friday.

Trainer Con Karakatsanis said the six-year-old gelding is “on track” to resume from a break in the Group III Cameron Handicap at Newcastle on September 16.

“He’ll only be having an easy trial on Friday because I want to trial him again in a fortnight but I’m very happy with how he is progressing,” Karakatsanis said.

“The horse spelled very well and came back in great shape and he’s carried on where he left off when he got back.”

Karakatsanis said the only run set in stone for the campaign is the Cameron.

The trainer will then weigh up a start in the George Main Stakes before heading to Melbourne or going south immediately after the first-up run.

“I’m a bit undecided at this stage,” he said.

“He’ll probably only have three runs leading into the Cox Plate because we get the best out of him when raced like that.

“I’d say he’ll stay in Sydney until after the George Main but we’ll just wait and see how we go.”

Black Piranha has raced just once past 1600 metres but Karakatsanis believes the son of Clang has all the attributes of a horse which can handle the extra distance.

“He relaxes so we’ll in his races that I’m confident he’ll get the extra ground,” he said.

“We’ll test him out in the Caulfield Stakes a fortnight before the Cox Plate so he should be at his top when we get to Moonee Valley.”

Black Piranha’s regular jockey Tye Angland will partner the gelding in his trial on Friday.

TAB Sportsbet have Black Piranha listed as an $18 Cox Plate chance.
