Jimando well backed for 2012 Chairmans Stakes

Blue Diamond favourite Jimando has been well backed to win the Chairman’s Stakes with bets of $10,000 and $7000 arriving at Sportingbet Australia.

The Tony McEvoy trained colt impressed with a dominant win back at Caulfield in October and Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said he had also been well supported for the Blue Diamond for which he was currently the $5.50 favourite.

“Jimando has been really well supported at $2.40 for the Chairman Stakes tomorrow with a number of big bets coming in,” Sullivan said.

“He has also trimmed up from $6.50 to $5.50 for the Blue Diamond in that time with some solid bets arriving.

“He was super impressive in his only start to date and that form has been stamped by The Travelling Man winning last week after finishing fourth to Jimando at his only other start.”

Sullivan said the only other runner to come in for any support was the Mark Kavanagh trained If I Could, which has shortened from $4.00 to $3.60.

“If I Could was a bit unlucky on debut and punters have really narrowed this race down to him and Jimando at this stage,” he said.

Huegill backed in Zeditave Stakes

Huegill is the horse punters want in the Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield with the colt deposing Benfica as favourite for the Listed event.

The Caulfield Guineas placegetter has been backed from $5.50 to $4.20 with TAB Sportsbet and has a 3.5kg weight advantage over topweight Benfica, who has drifted from $4 to $4.80 for Thursday’s 1200m race.

Trainer Peter Moody had an encouraging report on Huegill.

“He’s returned in great shape. We spelled him after his good third in the Caulfield Guineas,” Moody said.

“He was an immature type of colt but he’s really furnished out nicely with his spring-summer break.

“I think he’s going to be at his best at a mile, maybe even a mile-and-a-quarter.

“But being big and strong and fresh and happy, I think he’ll run very well in the Zeditave.”

Huegill, to be ridden by Luke Nolen, drew barrier eight in the 10-horse field and Moody said the colt would be ridden midfield.

There looks to be good speed with the likes of on-pacers Petman, Pakari Toa and It Is Written engaged.

“I think, ridden patiently, not right back but midfield, he should be able to stay in touch with them,” Moody said.

“He’s got good speed if required but I think ridden a bit patiently with nice cover he’ll be very strong late.

“He heads towards the Australian Guineas and I take heart from the fact that he was quite immature when horses like Helmet and Manawanui beat him comprehensively in the spring.

“But it’s hard to see where they are going to improve.

“They may, and if they do they are too good for us.

“But if they don’t, my bloke has found quite a bit of that margin with his break and I’m looking forward to taking them on again at a mile.”

Benfica is also heading towards the Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 3 as are fellow Zeditave hopefuls Specter, Instinction, Adamantium, Mister Milton and Unpretentious.

The Peter Snowden-trained Benfica hasn’t raced since winning the Group One T J Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm in June but is unbeaten in two first-up starts.

Sweet Little lies favourite for 2012 Blue Diamond Preview

Sweet Little Lies is the $2.20 favourite with online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au to take out the fillies Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield on Australia Day.

Members Joy is on the second line of betting at $5.50 while Demasheen, despite drifting to $11 after opening at $9.00, has firmed into $8.50, as has The Darling One, who opened at $13.

“Sweet Little Lies was very impressive in winning easily on debut but Members Joy remains the biggest danger in what is a very good race,” sportsbet.com.au’s Ben Hawes.

In the Blue Diamond Preview for colts and geldings, Cambiaso is the $3.50 favourite despite being opened at $3.20. Andre Roo Hoo with Damien Oliver on board is next at $5.50 while plenty of money has come for The Travelling Man, who’s been backed into $7.50 from $11.

In Sydney, Chris Waller looks to have a stranglehold on the Australia Day Cup at Warwick Farm, with favourite Permit firming into $3.80 from $4.20 while stablemate Wazn is on the second line of betting at $4.40.

“Permit is flying and the majority of money has come for him but there has been a little bit of interest for Wazn,” Hawes said.
